Show it enough examples of something, and it learns to spot similar patterns in new stuff. Your spam filter knows what suspicious emails look like - it’s seen millions of them! Netflix has watched millions of people's viewing habits - it can’t know what you want, but it can make a really good guess.

The Two Types That Matter

There are two main kinds of AI you need to know about. Narrow AI does one specific job really well. Your phone recognizes your face, Alexa understands voice commands, and your bank spots weird transactions. Each of these is AI, but they can only do one thing.

General AI would be like having a digital human that can think, learn, and adapt to anything. That's the sci-fi movie stuff, and it doesn't exist yet. Everything you use today is narrow AI.
