Link Building Without Spam: Real Strategies That Work

I know the idea of backlinking to build an SEO strategy isn’t the most favorable, because being honest, it can seem like spam.

But there are also more sustainable and genuine strategies to get backlinks! For it to work, you need to be making content that’s actually worth linking to - it’s got to provide real value.

If your content helps people, solves a problem, or says something genuinely useful, other sites will want to reference it. That’s how you get links that move the SEO needle — without begging for them.

The goal is to give people a reason to link to you. That means creating content that's actually useful - think unique research, industry surveys, free tools… or even just a really detailed guide that explains something properly. Journalists and bloggers are always on the lookout for sources to back up their point, so if your content makes their job easier, they’ll likely reference it.

Media Outreach and HARO

One of the easiest wins is using the Help a Reporter Out — or HARO method. It connects journalists with people like you who have something useful to say.

You reply with a helpful quote, they publish it in their article, and as a result, you’ve got a backlink from a legit news outlet. Don’t get me wrong - it takes a bit of effort, but it builds serious authority over time.

Also: start building relationships with the people writing in your space. Journalists, bloggers, creators - if you’ve got a good story, some solid insights, or even just an interesting opinion, they’ll want to hear from you.

Local media is underrated too. They love stories about local businesses doing cool stuff - don’t be afraid to pitch them.

Partnership and Collaboration Opportunities

Good business partnerships often lead to natural linking opportunities. If you’re teaming up with someone on a campaign, co-hosting an event, or even just collaborating on content, it makes sense to link to each other - it’s helpful, and you aren’t doing anything wrong.

Speaking at events? Showing up on podcasts? Contributing to roundups? All of that builds visibility and gives you legit links from trusted sources.

Sponsorships can help too - just make sure the links are marked properly, and don’t rely on this as your only strategy.
