How to Avoid SEO Cannibalization with Proper Keyword Mapping

This is a huge SEO mistake that loads of websites make without even realising it:

They write multiple pages about the same thing… targeting the exact same keyword.

And guess what happens? You’re not dominating the search results - you’re fighting yourself.

Instead of having one concrete page that Google can trust, you’ve got a bunch of weaker ones all fighting for the same attention.

It’s like sending three salespeople to close the same person with slightly different pitches. Confusing for the buyer and embarrassing on your part.

Creating a Clear Site Structure

A clear site structure is basically giving each page on your site its own job. One keyword. One purpose. And one clear page that tells Google exactly what it's there to do.

You should focus on building your site like a pyramid - stay with me here.

At the top, you’ve got your homepage, the broad keywords, brand name, general info.

Then come your service or category pages. These target things like “SEO services” or “digital marketing packages.”

And under that? You’ve got the blog posts, case studies, product pages, all going after those super specific, long-tail keywords like “how to boost local SEO in 2025” or “email marketing audit checklist.”

It’s all about having structure. You want each page doing its bit without stepping on anyone else’s toes.

Identifying Cannibalization Issues

If you haven’t done so already, connect your site to Google Search Console and have a nose around.

If you notice multiple pages showing up for the same search terms, and they’re not meant to, you’ve got a keyword tug of war on your hands.
